🔑How to Reset Your Microsoft 365 Password

Step-by-step guide to resetting your Microsoft 365 password using self-service password reset.

If you've forgotten your password or your account is locked out, you can often reset it yourself without contacting the helpdesk. Microsoft's Self-Service Password Reset (SSPR) lets you get back into your account in just a few minutes.

Option 1: Reset from the Sign-In Screen

  1. Go to https://login.microsoftonline.comarrow-up-right and enter your email address.

  2. On the password screen, click "Forgot my password".

  3. Complete the CAPTCHA verification to prove you're not a robot.

  4. Choose a verification method:

    • Text my mobile phone — You'll receive a code via SMS.

    • Email my alternate email — A code will be sent to your recovery email.

    • Microsoft Authenticator app — Approve the notification on your phone.

  5. Enter the verification code when prompted.

  6. Create a new password that meets the following requirements:

    • At least 14 characters long

    • Contains a mix of uppercase letters, lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols

    • Is not a password you've used before

  7. Click Submit — you're back in!

Option 2: Change Your Password (When You Know Your Current One)

If you can still sign in but want to change your password:

  1. Go to https://mysignins.microsoft.com/security-infoarrow-up-right.

  2. Sign in with your current credentials.

  3. Click "Change password".

  4. Enter your old password and your new password twice.

  5. Click Submit.

My Reset Link Expired — What Do I Do?

Password reset links are only valid for a short period of time. If your link has expired:

  • Go back to the sign-in page and click "Forgot my password" again to generate a fresh link.

  • Complete the process promptly — don't leave the page open and come back later.

Tips for Creating a Strong Password

  • Use a passphrase — a string of random words is easy to remember and hard to crack (e.g., BlueTruck$Running42!).

  • Never reuse passwords across different services.

  • Consider using your company's password manager to store and generate strong passwords.

  • Never share your password with anyone, including IT staff.
