This guide explains how to access and manage quarantined emails in Microsoft 365 (M365). Quarantined emails are messages flagged as spam, phishing, or containing harmful content by M365 security features.

Access the Email Quarantine

  1. Sign in using your M365 credentials (your email address and password).

Once logged in, you will land on the Quarantine page, which displays all quarantined messages.

Review Quarantined Messages

  1. Understand the Layout

    • The quarantine list displays columns like:

      • Time received: When the email was received.

      • Subject: The subject line of the email.

      • Sender: The email address of the sender.

      • Quarantine Reason: Why the email was quarantined (e.g., spam, phishing, or bulk mail).

  2. Use Filters to Narrow Down Messages

    • Click the Filters option to sort or search for specific emails.

    • You can filter by:

      • Sender address

      • Subject

      • Time received

  3. Preview Messages

    • Select an email to view its details, such as the message header or content preview, to determine if it is legitimate or not.

Take Action on Quarantined Emails

  1. Release an Email

    • If you identify a legitimate email, select it, then click Release.

    • The email will be delivered to your inbox.

    • (Optional) Check the box to Report message as having no threats if the email is mistakenly flagged as spam.

  2. Allow Sender

    • To allow messages from a sender, select the message, click More, then click Allow sender.

    • Future messages from the sender will be allowed.

  3. Delete an Email

    • To remove unwanted emails permanently, select them and click Delete.

    • Deleted emails cannot be recovered.

  4. Allow a Sender

Email Notifications for Quarantined Emails

You may receive regular quarantine summary emails from quarantine@messaging.microsoft.com listing flagged messages.

Use the links in these emails to review or release specific messages directly without logging into the portal.

Additional Tips

  • Check Quarantine Regularly: To ensure no legitimate emails are missed, review your quarantine folder periodically.

  • Be Cautious: Only release emails you are confident are safe. Suspicious emails should remain quarantined or reported.

  • Contact IT Support: If you are unsure about a message or encounter issues, contact your organization’s IT support team for assistance.

By following these steps, you can effectively manage your quarantined emails in M365 and ensure your inbox remains secure.
