πNew Employee IT Setup: What to Expect
What new employees can expect during their IT setup and how to get started on day one.
Welcome aboard! This guide explains what happens with your technology setup as a new employee, what you'll receive, and how to get up and running quickly.
Before Your First Day
Your manager will work with eTop Technology to get your accounts and equipment ready. Here's what's typically set up before you arrive:
Microsoft 365 account β Your email, Teams, OneDrive, and Office apps
Computer/laptop β Configured with the applications you'll need
Security tools β Antivirus, endpoint protection, and monitoring software
Printer access β Configured for your office location
VPN access (if applicable) β For remote access to office resources
Note: Some items may take a few days depending on equipment availability and account provisioning. Your manager will communicate the timeline.
On Your First Day
1. Sign In to Your Computer
You'll receive your initial login credentials (usually from your manager or IT). Your first sign-in will typically prompt you to:
Set a new password β Choose something strong (at least 14 characters with a mix of letters, numbers, and symbols).
Set up Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) β You'll need your personal mobile phone for this step. See our MFA Setup Guide.
2. Set Up Microsoft Outlook
Outlook is your email and calendar. It should be pre-configured, but if prompted:
Open Outlook from the Start menu or taskbar.
Enter your email address when prompted.
Sign in with your new password.
Approve the MFA prompt on your phone.
3. Sign In to Microsoft Teams
Teams is how your team communicates and collaborates:
Open Teams from the taskbar or Start menu.
Sign in with your email and password.
Your manager should add you to the appropriate Teams channels.
For a guide on using Teams, see: Using Teams
4. Verify Printer Access
Try printing a test page to make sure your printer is connected:
Go to Settings β Bluetooth & devices β Printers & scanners.
Find your office printer in the list.
Click on it and select "Print test page".
If you don't see a printer, see our Printer Troubleshooting Guide.
Setting Up Your Mobile Phone (Optional)
If your organization uses mobile device management:
Download Microsoft Outlook and Microsoft Teams from your phone's app store.
Sign in with your work email and password.
You may be prompted to install Microsoft Company Portal β this helps your organization secure work data on your phone.
